The Best of 2010: May

This image was taken during the last day of the razor clam dig at Copalis Beach.  We went at the end of April, but this was technically taken on the first day of May.  I submitted it to the Seattle Times and they printed it as part of their "Pix of My Weekend" series.  Cool....

I tried some new things this month based on some techniques I had read about.  I tried to create some funky looking, dream-like images using the lens and very little editing on the computer.  This particular image was created by shooting diagonally into a small stand mirror.

This was another image from that same dream series.  Just a simple "Blow some bubbles over this mirror" instruction combined with an upside perspective.

Gerbera daisies are my favorite.  I always like to have at least one on my deck.  We had some sunny days mid-month and I tried some selective focus techniques on the center of the flower.  Amazingly, I did not alter the light or the color of the image.  The center light is the sun and the dark background is the contrast against my house...although my house is not black...so it's kind of weird....

This is when he decided that he could beat the kid running from 1st to 2nd....from the outfield....He made it too...and I love that his hat flew off and got caught in mid-air.

I took my kids to play at my brother's house one afternoon.  He has a Slip n' Slide in his backyard.  I positioned myself at the bottom of the slide with my telephoto lens and got this image of my niece splashing through the pool at the end of the slide.

This is one of the girls on my son's baseball team.  I don't remember what had just happened, but one of the coaches was congratulating her on a great play when she raised her arms to give herself a cheer.

Sunset at the beach is one of the best times of day.  I kept waiting for the golden light to set the sky on fire with bursts of red and yellow and orange.  But on this day, it never happened.  It was a silver sunset...and it was cool....

For the second year in a row I made a visit to Tahoma National Cemetery to photograph a series for Memorial Day.  I've always found cemeteries interesting, but to walk through the headstones of fallen soldiers is indeed a humbling experience.  This name stopped me.  Brian Bradshaw.  He was 24 years old and died fighting for freedom.  They read his name on the news on Memorial Day.

I love that you can read "IRAQ" through the center of the wreath.  That made it so relevant and timely for me.  I've heard about the World Wars...Korea...Vietnam....but I've lived through the Persian Gulf, Afghanistan, and Iraq.

This seemed like such a private moment.  I felt a little funny taking her picture, but she never even knew I was there.  She was visiting with him.....

This was one that I loved the moment I took it.  And I'm so glad I got it because when I went back a couple of days later, the cemetery crew had come through and cleaned everything off in preparation for the holiday.  This flag and all of the flowers were gone.

I visited the cemetery twice during the week in hopes of getting some shots of the markers with the American flags in front of them.  I thought it would make for more dramatic and meaningful images.  And it did.  All of the flags lined up and every now and then a red one with the letters "KIA" on it...."Killed In Action".

This image is why I'm so glad I went back to see the flags.  To see them in a row like that just gave me goosebumps.  I love them here.  I love that the flowers were yellow...just like a ribbon.
